On June 23, the "Nomadic World Heritage Initiative: International Experts Conference" was launched in Baku, organized jointly by the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
The event brings together experts from international organizations including the World Heritage Centre, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), ICOMOS, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and specialists from the USA, China, the UK, Spain, Canada, Italy, Germany, Austria, Türkiye, France, Montenegro, Kenya, Ghana, Benin, South Africa, Uzbekistan, and Georgia, as well as researchers from scientific institutes, universities, and local experts.
Running until June 25, the conference aims to study nomadic cultural landscapes across various regions of the world, discuss the preservation of this heritage, and explore the development of sustainable tourism potential amid climate change and socio-economic transformations. The program includes presentations, panel discussions, and thematic working sessions involving nearly 30 representatives from 18 countries.
The conference will also focus on practical mechanisms for preserving the Cultural Landscape of Khinalig People and “Köç Yolu” Transhumance Route, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023, promoting its protection, realizing its tourism opportunities, and safeguarding similar heritage types worldwide.
