The XI Nevsky International Ecological Congress, held on 22–23 May 2025 at the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg, featured the participation of Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB).
One of the key topics of the congress was “Living in Harmony with Nature”. Representing ATB, Mr. Jalal Ismayilov, Director of the Board’s Representative Office in Russia, delivered a presentation titled “Azerbaijan’s Approach to Ecotourism.” The presentation outlined the country’s strategic priorities in unlocking its ecotourism potential, including the development of nature-based routes, expansion of hiking trail networks, and promotion of birdwatching destinations, which are gaining popularity among nature enthusiasts.
Jalal Ismayilov also emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to building a more sustainable tourism sector, particularly in the context of its Presidency of the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29). He highlighted the importance of the Tourism Climate Action Declaration adopted during the event, which reaffirms Azerbaijan’s commitment to climate action and environmental responsibility in the tourism sector.
The Nevsky International Ecological Congress has been held since 2008 and is co-organized by the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS Member States and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. It has become a key platform for parliamentary dialogue on environmental safety and the harmonization of environmental legislation in the CIS region.
Ecotourism remains one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry. The dedicated session within the Congress provided a timely opportunity to discuss the prospects for ecotourism development and the critical need for regulatory frameworks and financial support to sustain growth in this area.
