In a significant step toward regional tourism development, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan signed a strategic cooperation agreement on April 4th in Samarkand, aiming to boost joint initiatives along the historic Silk Road. The agreement outlines collaborative efforts to increase both countries’ visibility in global tourism markets and develop shared tourism products.
A meeting was held between Azada Huseynova, Deputy Chairperson of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Umid Shadiev, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, to discuss ways to further strengthen tourism ties between the two countries. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, exploring joint initiatives along the historic Silk Road, and collaborating within international tourism platforms.
During the meeting, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between Azerbaijan Tourism Board and Uzbekistan’s National PR Center. The agreement was formalized by Florian Sengstschmid, the CEO of Azerbaijan Tourism Board, and Dilshod Murodullaev, Director of the National PR Center. The document outlines a joint effort to boost tourist flows through the “Silk Road Tours” initiative, expand both countries’ visibility in Central European and global markets, develop shared tourism products, and organize joint promotional activities and B2B meetings.
As part of the visit, Ms. Huseynova also met with Dilshod Narzikulov, Director of the UN Tourism Academy in Samarkand, to discuss cooperation in the field of tourism education. The visit included a familiarization tour of the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, where the two sides agreed to carry out joint research with the university’s Silk Road Research Center. The research will focus on further developing the Silk Road as a unique tourism product through collaborative academic and practical approaches.
